Katie Faraks
Visual Artist
Katie Farkas (they/she), an American artist, was born and raised on Long Island, NY. She has a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in education from Adelphi University and a double minor in Philosophy and Art History. Farkas’ work consists mainly of mixed media pieces that explore what it means to bear witness and readdress fleeting moments in an effort to understand them.

We all live in a world overloaded with images. Using photography, installation, and video, I ask for a contradiction: in the ambiguous, to find the familiar, and to be present while considering memory. My work pulls from family and childhood images as resources to examine these nebulous, yet documented moments. I re-photograph photos of my youth with my family, targeting awkward interactions, gestures and touch. With overlapping video I want to discuss the impact of technology, and the monotony of existence, and explore what it's like to come of age in the 21st century.
We all bear witness to monotonous, fleeting moments but I want to take time to pause, embrace, and rediscover them. I want to explore and recognize why we document and how images have an impact on how we remember. I create art of this moment, of the next moment, art of the past moment, and where they all come to meet.
